Dear Self, Please remember ….

A simple exercise we did today, which I’ve done with groups for years, begins with leading everyone in a brief visualization seeing yourself from above from the moment you wake up to when you go to sleep at night. What is an average day like for you? What is the first thing you do each morning? And how caught are you by life’s unexpected events? Where are your thoughts when you go to sleep?

I then ask everyone to open their eyes and begin writing, “Dear Self, Please remember … “ And see what the message is. I’ve done this many times and it’s different every time. Often I see that I need to stand up taller, and take more pauses throughout the day, simply coming back to Self.

The theme that came up for most people this morning was, “Slow down”. We live in a fairly frenetic world with a lot of technology and demands on our time. We simply need to SLLLOW down, pause and breathe. It’s all going to be ok. And maybe everything is even working out beautifully even if we cannot tell. After everyone wrote, I brought out the colored pencils and we decorated our letters to self, picking out the main words we needed to remember. We then shared our unexpected insights. Such a helpful way to remember how wise our higher selves are.
